Rocket Academy

This year’s Rocket Academy, focusing on Environmental Awareness and Responsibility, will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015. During this session, your children will learn about the Earth and its limited resources, how they impact the environment, and their roles in preserving it.

For this year’s session we have partnered with Westview’s Science NHS to bring to your children an exciting day of discovery, inquiry, and knowledge about the uniqueness of planet Earth with its incredible biodiversity.

This is a free event; however pre-registration is required as spaces are limited. Please print and complete one registration form for each family and send it back with your child. If more students register than we are able to accommodate, we may need to hold a lottery drawing. Registration forms are due back on March 16, 2015.

As with previous Rocket Academy sessions, students will be divided into 3 groups: a Kindergarten and First grade group (Gemini Crew), a Second and Third grade group (Apollo Crew), and finally a Fourth and Fifth grade group (Endeavor Crew).

The Gemini Crew will focus on recycling activities, including sorting recyclable objects as well as making an art collage from recyclable materials. The Apollo Crew will learn all about the Biosphere as well as have a fun activity focused on the Tragedy of the Commons (when people try to reap the greatest benefit from a given resource, it will lead to its depletion). The Endeavour Crew will work on building their own little biosphere in a bottle in addition to an activity around Tragedy of the Commons.

Just a few reminders: check-in will be between 8:15 – 8:30 am. There will be NO before or after care. Parents will be responsible for timely drop-off and pick-up of their children.  Also, we ask that parents provide a snack and water bottle for their child. More details will follow

About Rocket Academy

MISSION: The mission of Rocket Academy is to provide our children (students at Rock Creek Elementary school), with a unique opportunity to explore topics that speak to their various interests.

HISTORY: Rocket Academy was founded during the 2012 – 2013 school year. It came to fruition due to the hard work of parent volunteers who were concerned by the budget cuts and the many days being cut from the school calendar. The PTC funded the first Rocket Academy in January 2013, and has been doing so ever since.

 Rocket Academy

Rocket Academy initially started as half-day sessions held for all Rock Creek students during staff in-service days when there was no school for students. During the 2012-2103 school year, we had 2 Rocket Academy half-day sessions. The first focused on science and math, the second focused on language and culture.

During the 2013-2014 school year, we had 2 additional half-day sessions. In January, the focus was on math. In April, the focus was on literacy.

 Rocket Academy Math Workshops

At the request of the school principal Rocket Academy expanded in early 2013, to include Rocket Academy Math Workshops. These workshops were held once every other week and provided additional math support for specific 4th and 5th grade students through the end of the school year.

Rocket Academy Math Workshops were only held during the 2013-2014 school year.
